Gembdenbach

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gembdenbach is an eastern, right-hand inlet of the Saale , which rises near Kleinlöbichau in the Saale-Holzland district and flows along federal road 7 in an east-west direction through Großlöbichau , Wogau and Jenaprießnitz , before it is flanked by the steep mountain slopes of the Jenzig im North and the local mountain in the south reaches the Middle Saale Valley . Here it initially turns north and flows into the Saale near the Jenaer Ostbad and the old bridge to Kunitz .

The sources on the Wöllmisse , in the Schillertal and in the Löbertal ("Osterbach") are less than 8 km as the crow flies from the confluence with the Saale. The gradient is twenty times greater than that of the Saale in Jena. The most recent devastating flood situation, however, dates from June 1859.

The Gembdenbach is decisive for the topography of the city of Jena. The breakthrough of the brook left a striking cut in the Muschelkalkplatte east of the Saale and in the process separated the horseshoe ridge from the Wöllmisse. In this depression are the eastern foothills of Wenigenjena and the main road from Jena to Eisenberg , which follows a country road and an old driveway. The city of Jena has designated part of the valley as GLB Gembdenbach .
