Political career

British House of Commons

O'Donnell ran several times in general election for the Liberal Democrats. However, he was unable to win a seat in the 2000 elections in the Falkirk West constituency or in the 2001 general election , again for Falkirk West, or in 2005 for Cumbernauld Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East .

Scottish Parliament

In the Scottish parliamentary elections in 1999 , 2003 and 2007 , O'Donnell ran for the constituency of Cumbernauld and Kilsyth but only received the third or fourth highest number of votes and thus missed the entry into the Scottish Parliament via direct mandate. Due to the resignation of Donald Gorrie before the 2007 elections, O'Donnell moved to the first position on the regional electoral list of the Liberal Democrats for the electoral region of Central Scotland and in 2007 won the only mandate for the party in this region. A few months before the end of the legislature, O'Donnell resigned from the party due to disagreements over political orientation and sharply criticized Chairman Tavish Scott . In the 2011 Scottish general election , O'Donnell ran as a non-party, but received only 821 votes.
