Donald Gorrie

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Donald Cameron Easterbrook Gorrie , OBE , DL ( April 2, 1933 - August 25, 2012 ) was a Scottish politician and member of the Liberal Democrats .

British House of Commons

Gorrie first appeared in the 1970 general election for the Liberal Democrats in the Edinburgh West constituency . Since he received only 8.2% of the vote, he was denied entry into the House of Commons . In the two elections in February and October 1974 Gorrie was able to record significant gains in votes with 21.5% and 16.4% respectively, but still did not win the direct mandate of the constituency. Gorrie ran again in the general election in 1992 for Edinburgh West and was only barely defeated by the candidate of the Conservative Party , James Douglas-Hamilton . The 1997 general election finally brought a change and Gorrie won the mandate by a clear margin over Douglas-Hamilton and moved into the lower house for the first time.

Scottish Parliament

In the first elections to the Scottish Parliament , Gorrie ran on the regional list of the electoral region of Central Scotland and, based on the election results, moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament . For the constituency of Edinburgh West , which he represented in the British House of Commons, Margaret Smith ran and won him for the Liberal Democrats. In the 2003 general election , Gorrie ran for a second term for the Central Scotland region and defended his seat. In the 2007 general election , he did not run.
