Hugo Hatzler saw the light of day in Passau as the son of General Doctor Hugo Balthasar Nikolaus Hatzler and his wife Karoline Friederike Luise Thekla Hatzler, née Kister .

In 1903 he married Anna Mäder, with whom he had four children.

Initially he studied forest science in Aschaffenburg, where he met Ludwig Thoma . Hugo Hatzler soon turned to painting. At the Munich Academy he studied a. a. with Heinrich von Zügel . From 1905 he chose Dachau as his place of residence and work. In the city on the Amper, he was a student of Hans von Hayek , who had headed a busy painting school in Dachau as a teacher since 1900. The painter was a member of the Dachau Artists' Association (KVD). He was known for his love of nature. In addition to painting, he also successfully ran a small farm. The artist mainly painted landscapes (with motifs from the Schleissheim Canal, Augustenfeld and Dachauer Moor) and animals, preferably horses and dogs.

In addition, Hugo Hatzler was a highly talented musician and mastered almost all instruments. He played the piano perfectly and blew the French horn. He also made a name for himself as a successful Irish Setter dog breeder. As such, he was a sought-after member of the judging panel at domestic and foreign dog shows.

The artist died of a heart attack at the age of 83 on August 8, 1955 in Dachau.

In his adopted home a street was named after him.
