Biography and artistic work

Hans von Hayek only studied for a short time at the Vienna School of Applied Arts . In 1891 he came to Munich. There he studied at the art academy with Gabriel von Hackl , Wilhelm von Lindenschmit the Younger and Carl von Marr, among others . He soon met the outdoor and animal painter Heinrich von Zügel , who had a decisive influence on his artistic path. Hans von Hayek left Munich, moved to Olching an der Amper and finally came to Dachau in 1900 . At that time, the market was known internationally as a place for artists. There he founded a private painting school (which he directed until 1915) and devoted himself mainly to outdoor painting . His group of students included u. a: Hugo Hatzler , Hermann Stenner , Anna Klein , Carl Olof Petersen and Norbertine Bresslern-Roth . Carl Thiemann wrote about the painting school Hayek in his memoirs of the artist town Dachau:

In the summer, numerous pupils came to him, who then did their studies either in the studio or outdoors after nature. Then you saw in the different parts of the so varied Dachau landscape in the moss, on the Amper, in the meadows, grouped around a beautiful tree, the painters and ' painters ', as the painters were generally called back then, standing or sitting and painting, often much to the annoyance of the farmers, whose grass was trampled on and often contaminated with the oil paint residues ... (Thiemann o. J., p. 18).

The financial success enabled him to take extensive study trips. It visited Paris, Holland, Hamburg, the Riviera and small fishing villages on the Baltic and North Seas.

As a member of the extended board of the Munich Secession , Hans von Hayek was one of the organizers of the Xth exhibition in the Kgl in 1904 . Art exhibition building on Königplatz , which also became known as the first exhibition of the German Association of Artists . He himself participated there with the oil painting Homecoming from Work - a little later he also became a member of the Artists' Association. In 1908 the artist took on German citizenship.

During the First World War he was employed as a war painter and was therefore always at the center of the brutal and inhuman battles. After 1918 Hans von Hayek lived again in Munich, interrupted by long trips to Indonesia, Colombo, Ceylon, Sumatra and the like. a. Countries.

His unsteady life “found a rich artistic expression in drawings , watercolors and oil paintings . Disasters such as the fire in the Munich Glass Palace in 1931 and the bombing of Hayek's Munich studio in 1945 left considerable gaps in this inventory. The rest of his works can be found in the large collections of Munich, Vienna, Krefeld, Stuttgart and in private hands ”(Thiemann-Stoedtner 1981, p. 33 f.).

The painter was a co-founder of the Dachau Museum Association, and also played a key role in the development of the picture gallery and the district museum in the city on the river Amper.

A considerable part of his works of art is in the Dachau Picture Gallery .
