Hugo Kastner (* 5. May 1921 in Rattendorf , Carinthia , † 27. April 2004 in Vienna ) was an Austrian graphic designer , writer and translator , the more than 2,800 covers for Western - dime novel published.

Life

Born in Carinthia, Kastner lived in Vienna all his life. After abandoning his English and history studies, he began to work as a freelance graphic designer. After commissioned work for galleries and some portrait drawings , he designed the first cover pictures for the Isabella and Falken publishers from 1950 onwards . He specialized in western drawings. From autumn 1954 he began to work as a writer and wrote several western novels for the CS Dörner Verlag under the pseudonym Emery Scott . He also worked as a translator. He ended his writing career in the mid-1960s. He worked for various publishers, such as Pabel-Moewig , the Alfred Mühlbusch publishing house , Hermann Borgsmüller and the Bastei publishing house . He ended his active career in 1984. Hugo Kastner died in 2004.

style

At the beginning of his active time he created around seven to eight oil paintings in DIN A0 format every month . The publishers usually gave only a few specifications, so that Kastner remained relatively free in the design. Most of the drawings were landscapes and portraits, less gun duels. He took templates from the Austrian cinema booklets Illustrierter Film-Kurier and the New Film Program . He also liked to use templates like John Wayne and Pierre Brice . Over time, of course, the second and third evaluation became more popular. From the mid-1970s onwards, production was cheaper and mostly only watercolors and oil pastels on A1 were used.
