Hugo Kaulen (born October 28, 1869 in Ronsdorf (now part of Wuppertal ), † July 9, 1954 in Wuppertal) was like his son Hugo Kaulen jr. (1900–1944) a German balloonist .

Life

Kaulen achieved world records (distance and duration) in ballooning in 1913. His time record was officially held until 1976. Together with Alfred Krefft and Alfred Schmitz, he drove 2828 kilometers in 87 hours in the "Duisburg" balloon (1680 m³) from Bitterfeld to Kyrgyzstan / Myssi in the Perm Governorate ( Ural Mountains ) from December 13 to 17, 1913 / Russia). Orientation was based on a school atlas. After landing, it took them three days in a dog sled to the next larger settlement. The balloonists were arrested on suspicion of espionage, brought to Moscow and only released after diplomatic negotiations.

Hugo Kaulen took part in the Gordon Bennett Cup three times . He undertook other races with, among others, Alexander Dahl in the United States. His name is also mentioned in connection with the Bonn balloon race in 1912.

Hugo Kaulen was a member of the Niederrheinischer Verein für Luftschifffahrt (NVfL) and received honorary membership of the German Aero Club in 1953 .
