Hugo Mühlestein

Hugo Mühlestein (born August 22, 1916 in Biel ; † February 9, 2008 ) was a Swiss high school teacher , classical philologist and mycenaean .

Mühlestein studied classical philology and linguistics at the universities of Bern (with the Indo-Europeanist Albert Debrunner ), Geneva and Basel (with Peter von der Mühll and Karl Meuli ). He graduated from the University of Bern in 1941 with a diploma for higher education. From April 1945 until his retirement in 1978 he taught at the girls' high school in Basel .

Since the announcement of the deciphering of Linear B script by Michael Ventris and John Chadwick in 1953 dedicated mill stone to the new discipline of Mykenologie and in particular the work on the writing tablets. On the basis of a dossier of writings on the topic mentioned, he received his doctorate in 1956 under Peter von der Mühll at the University of Basel. In 1966 he became a lecturer at the University of Neuchâtel , and in 1975 he was appointed adjunct professor ad personam there. In 1981 he retired, and in 1982 he received the title of honorary professor.
