The " human mammary tumor virus " (HMTV) is a putative beta retrovirus with a relationship to the mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV). The existence of such a virus has been suspected for decades, but nucleotide sequences indicating a distinct virus in human breast cancer were not confirmed until 2001. Viral particles were isolated a few years later. The role of HTMV and MMTV in human breast cancer is being reviewed.
