Family coat of arms of the von Humboldt family

Humboldt is the family name of the noble von Humboldt family , whose origins can be found in Königsberg in the Neumark . The Humboldt family developed into a family of officers and civil servants and lived in Brandenburg, Berlin and Pomerania. In 1738 she was raised to the nobility. One line extended the name to Humboldt-Dachröden because of the marriage of Caroline von Dachröden to Wilhelm von Humboldt . The best-known representatives of the family are the brothers Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt .

Name and ennoblement

The family name originated from the German "Hun + Bald", from which the name "Humpolt" developed. Humpolt in turn referred to a " grain measure " and a kind of bad " flax ". "Humpolt" also stands for "a smaller good, also a field measure"

Johann Paul Humbold (1684–1740) was the first Humboldt to have the nobility predicate “von” in his name. His sons were the first lieutenant Ludwig von Humboldt († 1750), the major Paul Heinrich von Humboldt (1719 – after 1761), lieutenant Friedrich Wilhelm von Humboldt († 1743) and Alexander Georg von Humboldt (1720–1779), major and later chamberlain under Friedrich II. Johann Paul Humboldt applied in favor of his sons, who were all in military service, for renewed confirmation of the elevation to the nobility . He wrote:

“Most gracious sir! After the request was made in order to receive the confirmation of the nobility, I had to go to Stolp to the Platenschen regimental field shearers, who after 4 weeks in bed cut 1 pair of bones, like a 16 gram piece, out of the wound, so that was now able am not able to set foot on it. But when I still wanted to bring the matter to an end because of my seven children, Ew. Royal Your Majesty Most High Person, I most obediently and most submissively, to give my previous petito very gracious hearing, to grant the nobility anew, also to confer the coat of arms attached to it. I consoled myself in the most gracious answer and remain in deepest submission Ew until the last drop of blood. Royal Majesty Most Submissive Stolpen May 16, 1738. Hans Paul Humbold "

There are strange anecdotes and stories about the ennoblement of the Humboldts :

"When the Mexican-based banker Wilhelm Baron von Humboldt (1888–1970), a great-great-grandson of Wilhelm von Humboldt, visited the capital of the GDR in October 1965 and also paid his respects to the President of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR, I was ( Note: Kurt R. Biermann) involved in this conversation. I took the opportunity to find out whether remnants of that hypothetical family tradition had survived and asked the question: “What, in your opinion, is the claim of the brothers Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt to the title of baron based on? ? ”Baron von Humboldt replied:“ I don't know. I can only say the following after a story from my father: When the application of the descendants of Wilhelm von Humboldt for the baronization of Wilhelm I of Prussia was presented, he asked in astonishment: Yes, isn't that what they are? In response to the negative answer, he replied: My very happy father always esteemed the two gentlemen von Humboldt as barons - so they were such! As a result, Wilhelm von Humboldt's descendants were granted hereditary use of the title of baron in 1875 - a process that is probably unique in the history of ennobling. ""
