In 1274 Brochenzell was in the hands of the Counts of Heiligenberg and a castle was first mentioned in 1277 as "Brobhentel" when it was sold to Count Hugo von Werdenberg († 1280). In 1401 the damaged castle came with the place to the Constance citizen Konrad Ruh , then to Hans von Hewen († after 1467; probably a Count of Hohenberg ) and later to the Count of Montfort .
Castle from the middle of the 16th century
1447 bought Lords of Humpis the rule Broch cell by Count Hugo X of Montfort and built there in the middle of the 16th century in place of former castle a small castle. In 1624 the Humpisschloss was completely renovated, a corner tower and a fountain were built.
In 1721 the Weingarten Monastery acquired Brochenzell and in 1748 the castle was expanded as an official building.
In 1810, Württemberg built the Brochenzell mayor's office in the castle.
In 1823 the local administration was relocated to Ettenkirch and the castle lost its lordly importance.
