Hwang Kap-Sun (* 1963 in Seoul ) is a South Korean ceramic artist and professor of ceramics at the College of Fine Arts, Faculty of Crafts & Design at Seoul National University .

Life

After completing his school education in Seoul, he began studying ceramics at Seoul National University in 1983 . He got his first contact with the material porcelain in the porcelain factory of his great-uncle, in which Korean porcelain was made with iron painting according to old models. Dissatisfied with the direction of the ceramics training in South Korea and inspired by an exhibition on German studio ceramics in Seoul, Hwang Kap-Sun decided to continue his studies in Germany. After a short stay in India, he prepared his move to Germany by taking language trips.

After his relocation, he continued his ceramic studies at the Muthesius-Kunsthochschule in Kiel with Johannes Gebhard in 1991 . During his studies, Hwang experimented with different glazes . In 1998 he submitted his thesis on stoneware . After completing his studies, he made designs as a freelancer at the State Porcelain Manufactory in Meissen . During this time he designed over 250 vessels with simple striped patterns, which he assembled from solid-colored porcelain masses or produced colored slurries .

In 2000, Hwang Kap-Sun was appointed visiting professor at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Hang-Zhou (China). Together with his wife Kang Si-Sook, he founded his own workshop in Kellinghusen in 2001 . In the same year he began working with the porcelain manufacturer Fürstenberg . First of all, he first had to gain experience with the Fürstenberg porcelain mass, which differs significantly from the Meissen porcelain mass in terms of processing. For his first work for the Fürstenberg porcelain manufacture - the QI bowl series - he made 700 attempts for the celadon glaze on the inside of the bowls. The QI bowl series received the Red Dot Design Award in 2003 for its feel and its successful connection between the tradition of European porcelain and Asian celadon glaze .

In the following years he made designs for bowls and vases as well as for the AURÉOLE dinner and coffee service for the Fürstenberg porcelain manufacturer. At the same time, together with Fürstenberg, he developed a large number of modern, easy-to-use glazes for porcelain vessels. In 2003 he received a professorship at Seoul National University, where he has been teaching the ceramics class at the College of Fine Arts ever since. Hwang Kap-Sun summarized his research results on glazes and porcelain masses in a database that is available to his students and which they can use for further development.

His ceramic and porcelain designs have been shown in various national and international exhibitions and have been awarded numerous design prizes. Hwang Kap-Sun is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics AIC. Since 2014 he has been director of the Yanggu Porcelain Research Center.

His works are shown in various ceramic and design museums, including a. in the Museum of Arts and Crafts Hamburg , in the Grassi Museum of Applied Arts (Leipzig), in the Museum of Applied Arts (Frankfurt am Main) , in the State Porcelain Manufactory Meissen , in the Ceramic Museum Berlin , in the State Museum Württemberg (Stuttgart), in the Museum Kellinghusen , in the Museum of the Porcelain Manufactory Fürstenberg and in the Chiwoo Craft Museum (Seoul).
