Hyacinthe Aube

Hyacinthe Laurent Théophile Aube (born November 22, 1826 in Toulon , † December 31, 1890 ibid) was French Minister of the Navy and Governor of Martinique between 1879 and 1881.

Live and act

Aube became a frigate captain in 1854 . In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 he organized the defense of the Carentan line . In 1879 he was given the post of French governor of Martinique and in 1881 returned to France as rear admiral and was entrusted with the management of torpedo operations. He held the post of French Minister of the Navy from January 7, 1886 to May 30, 1887. In 1886 he was promoted to Vice Admiral.

Aube founded the “ Jeune École ” school of thought , which represented the construction of smaller ship units at the expense of the battleships.

Volkmar Bueb provided the following assessment of Aubes: “He was a real Provençale with a friendly, simple, but spirited nature, open to discussion and open to everything new. He felt most at home in the quiet of provincial seclusion, far from the bustle of the big city and on the ship. His rise to Vice Admiral and Minister of the Navy was arduous and full of setbacks. "

Honors

Aube was a Grand Officer in the Legion of Honor .
