The bedstraw hawk ( Hyles gallii ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the hawkmoth (Sphingidae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 5.5 to 8 centimeters. In appearance, this species is very similar to the milkweed hawk ( Hyles euphorbiae ). However, one can distinguish them from the drawing of the upper side of the forewing. In the bedstraw hawk, the red of the hind wings is not as extensive and the olive-colored band on the forewings is not interrupted. The caterpillars are 70 to 80 millimeters long and are variable in color. One variant is olive green with black eye spots that are filled with yellow. The belly legs and the anal horn are red. Another color variant is black with yellow spots and with a red head and red anal horn.

habitat

You can find this species on sunny heather areas , protected areas , warm forest edges and wherever it can find food. The distribution area extends across Europe to the Arctic Circle and in the Alps to an altitude of 2,000 meters. The bedstraw hawk can also be found in northern Asia and North America . In Central Europe, this species occurs only in the foothills of the Alps.

development

In the first days of May, the nocturnal and crepuscular butterflies hatch, only to die in July after laying their eggs. In favorable years there can also be a second generation. The caterpillars are found from July to September.

Food of the caterpillars

The caterpillars live on fireweed ( Epilobium angustifolium ) and of course bedstraw ( Galium verum and Galium mollugo ). Which is preferably wood willow herb .

distribution

The bedstraw hawk was found in Central and Northern Europe beyond the Arctic Circle. In the northern areas, however, he appears only as an occasional immigrant. In Germany it is assumed that it is only down-to-earth in the central and northern parts of the country. In southern Europe it is native to northern Spain, northern and central Italy and the Balkans with the exception of Albania and Greece . In Asia Minor the species can be observed along the Black Sea coast and in the Caucasus , further through the temperate zone of Asia ( Himalayas ) to Japan . It is also found in North America.
