Hylocereus costaricensis is a species of plant in the genus Hylocereus fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The epithet of the species refers to the place where it was found in Costa Rica .

description

Hylocereus costaricensis grows like a climbing or liana with up to 10 centimeters thick, triangular, green shoots that become bluish gray to whitish over time. Their thin ribs are somewhat straight or wavy and not horny at the edge. The 2 to 4 short and strong brown thorns are usually accompanied by 2 hairs or bristles that soon fall off.

The up to 30 centimeters long, fragrant flowers appear near the shoot tips. They are white on the outside or sometimes reddish and white on the inside. The elongated, scarlet-colored fruits are up to 10 centimeters long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Hylocereus costaricensis is common in Costa Rica , Nicaragua and Panama . The first description as Cereus trigonus var. Costaricensis was published in 1902 by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Hylocereus in 1909 .

Hylocereus costaricensis is not well known and is possibly only a synonym for Hylocereus monacanthus .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
