Hylocereus monacanthus is a species of plant in the genus Hylocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species is derived from the Greek words "μόνος" (monos) for one and "ἄκανθα" (akantha) for thorn .
description
Hylocereus monacanthus grows shrub-like, climbing or stretched out with triangular green or sometimes covered shoots . The slightly wavy ribs have areoles , which sometimes have a small, triangular extension at the top. The 1 or 2 spines arising from the areoles are stiff and swollen at the base.
The white and pink at the base flowers have a diameter of up to 17 centimeters and lengths of up to 28 centimeters. The pericarpel is covered with a few, non-overlapping scales. The flower tube is curved upwards.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Hylocereus monacanthus is distributed in Nicaragua , Costa Rica , Panama , Colombia , Venezuela , Trinidad and Tobago , Guyana , Suriname , Ecuador and in northern Peru at altitudes of up to 2000 meters.
The first description as Cereus monacanthus by Charles Lemaire was published in 1845. Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed the 1922 in the genus Hylocereus .
A synonym is, among other things, Cereus lemairei Hook. (1854).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
