The white henbane ( Hyoscyamus albus ) is a species of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).
features
The white henbane is an annual, biennial or perennial plant that reaches heights of 20 to 80 centimeters. It is hairy , sticky and has an unpleasant odor. The stem is ascending and slender. The leaves are alternate , long stalked, ovate , 4 to 10 centimeters long and toothed bluntly . The flowers are sessile and in dense, turned to one side ears with leafy bracts arranged. Only the lowest flower is stalked. The calyx is bell-shaped, five-toothed and covered with glandular hair, during the fruiting period it is enlarged and bulbous. The crown is broadly funnel-shaped and has a width of up to 3 centimeters. There are 5 blunt lobes. The crown is yellowish-white, in the throat green or brown-violet. There are 5 stamens that protrude only slightly.
Flowering time is from May to August, sometimes all year round.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 68, less often 34.
Occurrence
The white henbane occurs from the Mediterranean region to southern Russia on rubble sites, walls and ruins. The distribution area includes Macaronesia, North Africa, Southern Europe, Ukraine, Western Asia and the Arabian Peninsula. In the Azores the species is a neophyte.
