Hypnum vaucheri ( hollow- leaved sleeping moss ) is a pleurocarpic deciduous moss from the Hypnaceae family .

features

Hypnum vaucheri forms dense, brown-green, cushion-shaped lawns. The secondary, ascending to upright stems, which originate from the runners-like primary stems, are 3 to 6 centimeters long and more or less irregularly branched to pinnate. The branches are about 3 to 15 millimeters long and, like the trunks, have almost kitten-shaped leaves. The densely packed leaves are crescent-shaped, one-sided, ovate, lanceolate, pointed, hollow and entire. The tip of the leaf is comparatively short, about half as long as the basal part; the leaf veins are short and usually double, more rarely also simple and forked.

The numerous leaf wing cells are quite similar, mostly about square and around 10 µm in size; Individual hyaline and enlarged cells can also be present on the outermost base. In the middle of the leaf, the cells are about 4 to 5 µm wide and 30 to 50 µm long, thick-walled, spotted and rounded at the ends. Stem leaves are up to 0.8 millimeters wide, branch leaves about 0.3 to 0.5 millimeters. Pseudoparaphyllia are sparsely found in the vicinity of the shoot systems, they are rounded-rectangular to semicircular and toothed or lobed. The trunk cross-section has a central cord, the epidermal cells are not hyaline.

The moss is diocesan , it is rarely fruitful.

Distribution and location requirements

Hypnum vaucheri with boreal-montane distribution occurs in Europe, parts of Asia, North America and tropical Africa (Ethiopia). In Europe, it is mainly found in montane to alpine mountain regions. It loves chalk and grows on rock, especially in dry and sunny locations.
