Hypoplectrus randallorum is a small sea fish from the family of sawfish (Serranidae). It occurs close to the coast almost in the entire Caribbean from the coast of Central America to the coast of the Greater Antilles and on the south coast of Florida . The species from the genus Hamlet perch had been known since 1960, but was not scientifically described until 2011 and named after the ichthyologist couple Helen and John E. Randall. John Randall caught the type specimens examinedfor the first description .

features

The type specimens had standard lengths of 7 to 9 cm. In addition there is the caudal fin, the length of which is 21.5 to 26% of the standard length. The body is flattened on the sides and high back. The greatest body height is around 45% of the standard length, the width of the body is 16.6 to 17.8% of the standard length. The head length is 38.5 to 41.5% of the standard length (SL). The caudal peduncle is higher (13.6 to 14.2 SL) than it is long (9.9 to 13.8% SL).

The soft rays of the dorsal and anal fin and the caudal fin rays are branched. Hypoplectrus randallorum has 23 to 24 vertebrae. All hamlet perches are very similar to one another. H. randallorum can best be distinguished from other species of the genus by its color. It is almost monochrome light to dark brown or tan . The nostrils are surrounded by a dark spot. There are other dark spots at the base of the pectoral fins and on the upper caudal peduncle. The size and intensity of the dark spots vary considerably. The head, abdomen and fins are sometimes slightly yellow. The pectoral fins are transparent.

Way of life

Like other hamlet perches , Hypoplectrus randallorum feeds on various small animals, including benthic shrimp, hover shrimp , as well as small crabs, mantis shrimp and fish. In one specimen, a 16.5 mm long goby ( Elacatinus evelynae ) was found in the stomach .
