Hyun Ki-young (born January 16, 1941 on Cheju Island ) is a South Korean writer .

Life

Hyun Ki-young was born on the island of Cheju in 1941 and witnessed the Cheju massacre at the age of seven . This traumatic experience influenced his development in his youth and at the same time enabled him to recognize his literary destiny at an early stage.

He studied didactics for teaching English at Seoul National University , after graduating in 1967 worked at a middle school and wrote prose. In 1975 he made his debut with the story Father , which was awarded by the Dong-a Ilbo newspaper . In 1979 his short story Suni's Aunt was published . Hyun Ki-young was the first Korean author to address the Cheju massacre in his works, which was forbidden at the time due to the confidentiality imposed by the South Korean government. The author was arrested and tortured for three days.

In 1986, Hyun received the Sin Tongyŏp Prize for Writers. In 1990 he was honored with the Manhae Literature Prize and in 1999 with the Hankook Ilbo Literature Prize .

In his works, Hyun Ki-young mainly deals with the Cheju uprising of 1948. In addition to his literary work, he was director of the "Institute for Research into the Cheju Uprising" and chairman of the Cheju Social and Cultural Council. He was also chairman of the National Literature Writers' Union and director of the Korean Culture and Art Foundation.
