I'm Making Believe is a song by James V. Monaco (music) and Mack Gordon (lyrics) released in 1944.

James V. Monaco and Mack Gordon wrote I'm Making Believe for the film Sweet and Low-Down (1944, directed by Archie Mayo ), in which Benny Goodman (himself) and Linda Darnell starred . The song is presented in the film by Lynn Bari (whose vocals are doubled by Lorraine Elliott), accompanied by the Benny Goodman Orchestra. I'm Making Believe received an Oscar nomination for Best Song in 1945 .

The war song addresses the feelings of women who think of their men fighting in the (Second World) War (" I'm making believe that you're in my arms though I know you're so far away ").

The cover version of I'm Making Believe , recorded by Ella Fitzgerald with The Ink Spots on August 30, 1944 ( Decca 23356, coupled with Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall ), was a number one hit in the US in late 1944 . Hal McIntyre's version reached # 14 in 1945. Les Brown / Doris Day , Cab Calloway , Harry James , Charlie Spivak (with band vocalist Lena Horne ), Bing Crosby and Jan Garber also recorded the song in 1944 ; Mildred Bailey sang I'm Making Believe in 1944 with the Goodman band on the CBS show Music 'till Midnight . Also Skinney Ennis (Ara RM 1078), Connie Russell / Frank De Vol (Capitol 3114), Bernie Leighton / Jacky Gleason, Gordon Jenkins / Dick Haymes , Lorez Alexandria and the UK, the orchestra of Geraldo ( Parlophone D 2056) interpreted the film song. Accompanied by Joe Pass , Ella Fitzgerald played the song again in 1986 for her album Easy Living ( Pablo ).

The song is not to be confused with the older song I'm Making Believe (That I Don't Care) by Al Dubin .
