Eleanor Zaimis
Eleanor "Nora" Zaimis , née Eleanor Christides ( June 16, 1915 in Galați , Romania ; † October 3, 1982 in Athens ) was a Greek-British pharmacologist.
Life
Zaimis grew up in Bucharest . Her father Ioannis Christidis was involved in shipping and her mother Eleni Chanoutsos was the daughter of a landowner. She studied pharmacology and medicine in Athens and worked there after graduating in 1938 (MB) in the Faculty of Pharmacology as an assistant to the pharmacology professor Ioakimoglou. In 1941 she received her MD and also a B. Sc. Degree in chemistry and was a member of a Greek committee to evaluate the new antibiotics.
In 1943 she married the politician Ioannis Zaimis for the second time (her first marriage was in 1938), from whom she separated again a few years later, and moved to England in 1947. In 1954 she became a British citizen. After initially attending the University of Bristol and the National Institute of Medical Research in Hampstead , she became a Lecturer in 1950 and 1954 Reader at the School of Pharmacy in London and was Head of Pharmacology at the Royal Free Hospital in London from 1954 to 1980. From 1958 she was a professor.
From around 1948 she and William Paton investigated the structure-activity relationships of methonium compounds as antihypertensive agents and local anesthetics, and made fundamental contributions to neuromuscular and cardiovascular pharmacology . She examined muscle relaxants and ganglia blockers . Later she dealt with nerve growth factors according to Rita Levi-Montalcini , at a time when these were still met with considerable skepticism.
In 1959 she and Paton received the Canada Gairdner International Award for their work on methonium compounds in pharmacology. In 1968 she became a member and 1974 Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians . Both received the Cameron Prize in 1956. In 1951 she became a member of the Physiological Society and served on its committee from 1967 to 1971. In 1979 she became an Honorary Fellow of the Faculty of Anesthesia at the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FFA RCS). In 1968 she received the NP Kravkov Prize in Pharmacology from the Soviet Academy of Medicine. She was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Athens and an honorary member of the Medical Academy in Rome.
In 1982 she died in Athens after a long illness.
