iDEAL is an online payment system from the Netherlands . It has existed since 2005 and is based on online banking (like giropay ). The method enables customers to pay by direct transfer from their bank account.

background

In 2006 iDEAL processed 4.4 million payments, in 2007 it was 14.9 million, in 2009 68.8 million, in 2011 93.8 million and in 2014 180.2 million payments. In 2015 an increase of> 20% was achieved. iDEAL belongs to the Dutch organization Currence , which also owns the PIN and Chipknip payment cards .

The buyer banks participating in iDEAL are ABN AMRO , bunq , ING , Knab , Rabobank , Triodos Bank , van Lanschot Bankiers and De Volksbank (with their various brands). These supply most of the Dutch online banking market.

As iDEAL acquirers for merchants or payment service providers, ABN AMRO , Adyen , BNG Bank, BNP Paribas Fortis , Buckaroo, Deutsche Bank , ING , NWB Bank , PAY.nl , PPRO, Rabobank , Smart2Pay and De Volksbank participate in the iDEAL payment system.

On the merchant side, a connection to the payment system can be made via a payment service provider in addition to direct cooperation with an iDEAL acquirer. IDEAL Collecting Payment Service Providers such as B. Payone , Heidelpay or Wirecard from Germany as well as a large number of Dutch service providers are available.

criticism

Although the participating banks present iDEAL as a secure payment method, there is no guarantee against fraud. IDEAL has already been the target of phishing attacks.

functionality

iDEAL offers merchants a real-time payment method (shown as being inexpensive and risk-free) with which they can accept internet payments. For customers, it offers the same environment as the online pages of the usual bank. A high level of security is achieved through two-factor authentication , namely an access token in the sense of challenge-response authentication , based on the chip of the debit card or the card for the ATM. The retailer does not receive any sensitive information, such as an account number or credit card number.

The disadvantage for the customer is that he has no right to chargeback; thus - even in the case of fraud - the money is gone. This is seen as a disadvantage for the customer using this payment method and at the same time an advantage for the merchant.

iDEAL works like this:

  • The dealer offers iDEAL as a payment method
  • The customer chooses iDEAL and chooses his bank and is forwarded to his bank
  • The participating bank shows transaction data
  • The customer enters the account number and signs with two-factor authentication
  • The bank authorizes the transaction in real time and debits the amount immediately. If it is not covered, the transaction is rejected
  • The merchant receives real-time confirmation of payment from the bank
  • The customer will be redirected from the bank's website back to the merchant's website with confirmation that the payment has been made

Giropay , paydirekt and instant transfer work in a similar way .
