The IG Metall Training Center Sprockhövel is an educational and conference center of the trade union IG Metall . When it opened, it was the largest educational institution of its kind in Europe.

History and first building

The first building of the educational facility operated by IG Metall in Sprockhövel in North Rhine-Westphalia was erected between 1968 and 1971 on an area previously used for agriculture south of the city center in Obersprockhövel . The inauguration took place on September 3, 1971 in the presence of the then Federal President Gustav Heinemann . The building of the education center measured 190 m × 115 m and thus had a built-up area of ​​29,423 m² on two floors. In addition to 216 guest rooms and 10 seminar and lecture halls, this complex included the infrastructure of a modern conference hotel , i.e. a restaurant , bar, swimming pool,Sauna and various leisure activities.

The previous building complex was gutted and demolished after the construction of the new building in 2012. High operating and maintenance costs, as well as an estimated need for renovation of 25 to 30 million euros due to leaky roofs, windows and facades, led the operator to the decision to replace the almost 40-year-old complex with a much smaller new building with just under 180 Replacing beds in 126 rooms.

New building

In the years 2009 to 2011, the old complex was replaced by a new building in the style of a conference hotel, which should take into account the changed usage requirements and the lower occupancy. The new building erected directly next to the old building was inaugurated in September 2011.

The new building has five seminar rooms with variable occupancy and 24 workgroup rooms on a floor area of ​​256,000 m². There is also a divisible large hall for around 450 people for larger events. The house can accommodate 20,000 seminar participants per year.

The new building no longer includes a swimming pool and instead relies on a wellness area with sauna and fitness facilities. In addition to restaurants and a bowling alley, there is also an outdoor area where basketball, football, badminton, boules and climbing facilities can be used in an adjacent forest for mountain biking.
