Press reviews

III: Trauma received mostly positive reviews from the trade press. Fabian Schneider from the German music portal Metal.de writes that Harakiri for the Sky would not only focus on the aggressiveness of Black Metal on their album , but also specifically incorporate atmospheric sound passages into their pieces. He mentions pieces such as Calling the Rain , Funeral Dreams and Dry the River as references , whereby, as in the latter piece, the group also rely on dreamy and picturesque sounds that invite the listener to lose himself in the melancholy walls of sound. The critic judges that III: Trauma is not for listeners who can not make friends with emotional or post-black metal . However, those who can identify with Agrypnie , Tear Child or the band's previous album Aokigahara from 2014 will also enjoy this album. Robert Müller from the German Metal Hammer put forward the thesis that "Black Metal, the post-rock aesthetics, loud-quiet games and beautiful instrumental sound and thereby emotions not in small, but in large note sequences" pick up either quickly in a kitsch way or as catchy the predecessor Aokigahara could be. While in comparison he describes Aokigahara as a "rare ray of hope" in the post-black metal scene, III: Trauma tries to solve the thesis put forward by Müller in a Solomonic manner. Müller describes the music “at its core as dark rock music with funny vocals”. He draws the conclusion that III: Trauma is a refined, successful and better successor but not a musical quantum leap.

Kim Kelly of the English-speaking Vice writes that Harakiri for the Sky blends moments of beauty and utter ugliness into a cohesive whole. The duo process swaths of post-rock with light shadows of depressive black metal and post-hardcore- like vocals. The lyrics are about dying , but they are so poetically packaged that the tip is blunted, so the effect is far less moping than what a band named after a traditional suicide ceremony would generate. Björn Backes from the metal- specialized portal Powermetal.de describes III: Trauma as "the whole crowd simply impressive and rousing", so that he comes to the conclusion that with this release the paths to bigger stages are now open for the duo at the latest. Two reviews were found in the German music magazine Rock Hard : While Jan Jaedike rated the album positively, his colleague Andreas Schiffmann wrote more negatively about the third album. He wrote that the Viennese duo sound like a product of their musical role models and that the album comes across with boring structures, uniform screams and shimmering guitars. Schiffmann found the only positive innovation to be the omission of terrible cover versions, as the group did on their previous albums with Mad World or Hurt .

Stefan Frühauf from dark-festivals.de emphasized the contrasts between the melodic mood and the hardness as well as between the artistic claim and the catchiness of the album. He described III: Trauma as "the post-black metal album of the year" and awarded nine out of ten possible points. It was the highest rating given by dark-festivals.de in 2016.
