iRedstone is an app that teaches electrical and information technology basics about the popular Minecraft computer game . The software is available for smartphones , tablets and computers . The app uses the Redstone system, which can be used to recreate simple circuits in Minecraft .
iRedstone is the most comprehensive reference work on the Redstone system in Minecraft, especially in the German-speaking world and with over 4 million users one of the best-known Minecraft assistance apps. The app is developed by the German developers Frederik Riedel and Larissa Laich, later Frogg GmbH, and has been available for iOS, Android and Mac OS since 2012. The app is translated into German, English and 15 other languages.
background
The Redstone technology in Minecraft prepares the basis for electrotechnical circuits . So-called redstone lines can either forward an active or inactive signal. This provides the basis for simple binary circuits so that logic gates can be put together. From these logic gates - as is usual in normal electrical engineering - larger mechanisms can be designed, for example a binary computer. All of these topics are covered and explained in the app, so Minecraft and iRedstone are used as educational tools in this case.
Structure and content of the app
The app has a main menu with different categories in which the individual instructions and explanations are divided:
Category title | description | Examples |
---|---|---|
Library | Listing, explanation of recipes for Redstone-specific items in Minecraft. | Redstone block, redstone dust, redstone ore |
Useful Mechanisms | Smaller mechanisms that can be helpful in all sorts of ways. | Relay, random generator, block exchanger |
Transportation & elevators | Means of transport that can transport people, objects and animals vertically or horizontally. | Elevators, assembly lines, minecarts |
Farms & Production | Automated farms and production facilities for the production of food and other consumables. | fully automated multi-purpose farm, sugar cane farm, cobblestone farm |
Gates & Portals | Interesting, hidden or secret gates that are particularly large, adventurous or unusual. | 3x3 piston gate, castle gate, lava pull bridge, sensor door |
House building & accessories | Smaller constructions that can be useful when building a house or in the garden. | Fountain, shower, refrigerator, table, lighting |
Falling | Mean and sneaky traps to catch or scare off other players or monsters. | Carpet trap, desert trap, box trap, TNT trap |
Adventure maps | Ideas and constructions for obstacles in adventure maps. | Death jump, archer portal, jump map |
Games & fun | Fun, sometimes pointless discoveries in Minecraft, mostly Redstone-specific. | Fun with particles, dance floor, four in a row, talking trash can |
Defense & cannons | Mechanisms that can be used for defense purposes. | Cannons, backup equipment |
Command block | Explanations of the command block, a programmable unit in Minecraft. | Basics, effects, particles, important commands |
Electrical engineering & logic gates | Explanation of the basics of electrical engineering and the most important gates. | AND gates, OR gates, NOT gates, exclusive gates |
computer | The construction of more complex mechanisms in combination with the logic gates is explained. | Binary calculator, segment display, half-machine |
Signaling technologies | Mechanisms for processing signal strength, signal length and signal storage. | Flashing circuit, BUD switch, signal length increase, signal length strength |
