The ISCH-2126 ( Russian ИЖ-2126 ) is a passenger car produced in the Russian Ischmasch works from 1987 to 2005 .

prehistory

In order to establish a sporty family vehicle on the market, IschAwto, the automotive division of Ischmasch, developed the prototypes ISCH-13 Start and ISCH-19 Heim based on the ISCH-2125 . Due to a lack of financial resources and the lack of interest from potential customers, the project was discontinued after a short time.

With the aim of creating a middle-class successor to the ISCH-2125, the project was revived in 1985 as a collaboration between IschAwto and AZLK (Moskwitsch) and AwtoWas (Lada), and a new Lada model was also to be created. It was feared that the body shape of a liftback station wagon favored by Ischmasch could have been considered plagiarism in the West , as Saab, Volvo and the Ford Motor Company had very similar models on offer. However, initially no other body concept could be found that was based on the predecessor far enough.

After several negotiations, Ischmasch, under pressure from AwtoWAS, gave up the initial concept from 1979 ( ISCH-2126 T-series ) and redesigned it into a normal hatchback. AwtoWAS and IschAwto presented their new models at the 1986 Moscow Motor Show. The WAS-2109 (in Europe: Lada Samara) and the ISCH-2126 Orbita celebrated their world premieres and delighted visitors. Both were initially only available as hatchbacks. Until the production release by the government, WAS also developed a convertible and a notchback sedan based on the sister model. Production started in 1987.

Model variations

The ISCH-2126 Orbit was manufactured with both front-wheel and rear-wheel drive. There was a very large selection of interiors. In addition to the usual plastic dashboard, variants made of cork and wood were also available. In addition to various types of fabric, seat covers were also made of leather. The vehicle concept was not only popular with private individuals.

commercial vehicles

While VAZ did the largest trade in its notchback sedan and convertible, IschAwto also offered the 2126 Orbit as a commercial vehicle in two basic versions. The two-seat pickup model ISCH-2717 with a large loading area and a five-door with five seats were also available. In the latter, the rear row of seats could be folded down in parts and then closed with the floor to the front seats.

Off-road vehicle

An off-road vehicle with the name ISCH-21261 4 × 4 or regionally also as ISCH-2126 Fabula appeared in March 1996. The engines and interior were identical to the other model versions. This station wagon had increased ground clearance and modified bumpers. Special models were also fitted with spoilers and rally body kits. In September 1996 (?) The 4x4 was discontinued due to very poor sales figures.

Facelift

1990

After the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, the first changes were made on 2126. After reports of broken windshields , tests in the wind tunnel revealed that the windshield had too much wind resistance and too little stability. This has been redesigned accordingly. The entire drive and brake system, which came from the Moskvich-412 from the 1960s, has also been modernized.

1992

In 1992 IschAwto had to look for other suppliers because of a financial emergency. From now on the chassis and steering were produced by Fuji Heavy Industries in Japan and the chassis was converted to MacPherson struts . Body production was relocated to modern production facilities from Komatsu , Kuka and Demag , and some body parts were made in Portugal. The quality of the vehicles became significantly better as a result, and production costs could be reduced enormously. Despite the better quality and lower purchase price, the 2126 Orbit remained an insignificant niche model throughout its life. In 1998 the production of the ISCH-2126 Orbit was stopped and the model was then completely revised.

1998

In 1998 the 2126 was revised and after technical modernization it was renamed ISCH-2126 Oda .

2004

The last revision was made by IschAwto in 2004. The 2126 received an LCD display, bumpers in body color and some vehicle parts from the Lada 110 . There were only black or gray fabric covers to choose from.

Legal dispute with AvtoVAZ and production stop

Without having obtained a license, WAS copied the technical changes made to the ISCH-2126 at that time in 1990 and used them in its Samara models. After a legal dispute that had lasted for several years, the Ischmasch-Werke dropped the lawsuit without any result in 2005 and then completely stopped production of their 2126 in protest. This angered some fans so much that ISCH clubs protested this surrender and demanded that production be restarted. So far, however, unsuccessful.
