I Know Why (And So Do You) is a song written by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren in 1941. It was best known for the interpretation of Glenn Miller and his orchestra in the film Adopted Glück .

History of origin

Writer Mack Gordon and composer Harry Warren wrote I Know Why for Adopted Happiness ( Sun Valley Serenade , 1941), the first of two musical films in which the Glenn Miller Orchestra appeared. Lynn Bari can be seen as the singer of the song in the film, but the singing voice was lent to her by the ghost singer Pat Friday (1921-2016), who was not mentioned in the opening credits. Bari's male counter-voice, John Payne , can be heard in the film with his own voice. In addition to Friday and Payne, the Modernaires can also be heard as a choir in I Know Why . The single was released as a shellac record on Bluebird Records , with Chattanooga Choo Choo on the B-side .

In the orchestral scene with I Know Why, which occurs early in the film, Bari as the singer and Payne as the pianist flirt with each other while singing I Know Why . The song is repeated twice during the course of the film, here now referring to the love luck of Payne's pianist and the leading actress Sonja Henie : In the middle part of the film, Payne's character Henie sings the song, at the climax of the film it is played again during Henie's figure skating -Show.

Cover versions and reception

Compared to the B-side Chattanooga Choo Choo , I Know Why is less well known. Nevertheless, in the following decades, cover versions of Ray Anthony (who was one of the trumpeters on the Glenn Miller recording in 1941) and his orchestra, Bert Ambrose's orchestra with singer Anne Shelton , June Christy and Robert Clary emerged . One of the better known covers comes from the Manhattan Transfer group . In the field of jazz, the discographer Tom Lord lists 85 cover versions of the song, among others by Teddy Weatherford , Eddie Brunner , André Previn , Jackie Paris , Mel Tormé , Erwin Lehn , June Christy , Ramsey Lewis , and in later years also by Ed Bickert , Bill Allred , Dave McKenna , Ruth Brown , Gray Sargent , Rebecca Kilgore, and Wesla Whitfield .

In the original Glenn Miller version, I Know Why is played in the war film Memphis Belle (1990) and the fantasy film Shape of Water (2017).
