Anne Shelton (born November 10, 1923 in Dulwich , London ; † July 31, 1994 in Herstmonceux , England ; actually Patricia Jacqueline Sibley ) was an English pop singer who was particularly successful in the 1940s and 1950s.

Live and act

Anne Shelton made her first recordings in 1940/1941 with the Bert Ambrose Orchestra and became known for entertaining the British troops in radio broadcasts and concerts during World War II . She was the first singer to sing an English version of " Lili Marleen ". In 1944 she performed with Glenn Miller and his orchestra. During the time of the Airlift , she sang several times for soldiers in Berlin . In 1949 she had two top 30 hits in the USA , "Be Mine" and "Galway Bay" . Also in 1949 she recorded the "sequel" to "Lili Marlene" , Johnny Johnston's "The Wedding of Lilli Marlene" , and was the front runner in the British Sheet Music Charts for seven weeks when there were no sales charts there for phonograms.

In Great Britain , however, in 1956 she had an "official" number one hit in the singles charts that have since been set up with the song "Lay Down Your Arms" , which was produced by Johnny Franz and where Joe Meek had one of his first jobs as a sound engineer. The song originally came from Sweden, where it was known as "Ann-Caroline" . In the US, the Chordettes recorded a cover version that rose to number 16 on the US charts.

She took part twice in the British preliminary round for the Eurovision Song Contest (with the songs "I Will Light a Candle" , 1961, and "My Continental Love" , 1963), but only finished fourth. In 1961 she was able to place another chart hit in the top ten - "Sailor" , an English version of the German hit "Seemann" by Lolita . However, she lost the duel with Petula Clark , whose version of "Sailor" became a number one hit at the same time .

She sang and acted in several films early in her career. In 1979, at the request of director John Schlesinger , she sang the song “I'll Be Seeing You” in his film “Yanks - Yesterday we were still strangers”. In 1980 she sang the song "You'll Never Know" for Queen Mum on her 80th birthday

In 1990 she was awarded the OBE for her work with the Not Forgotten Association , a charity that cares for disabled war veterans .

Anne Shelton died of a heart attack in 1994. In her obituary, the Daily Mail wrote : "Anne Shelton was the British embodiment of Lili Marlene for thousands of Desert Rats ".
