I'll never fight again (Original title: I Will Fight No More Forever ) is an American television film from 1975, which depicts the events during the campaign against the Nez Percé in 1877.

action

In 1877, the United States government decided that the Nez Percé Indians around Chief Joseph had to leave their native Wallowa Valley and move to the Lapwai Reservation. General Howard, the local military commander of the American army , is tasked with delivering this order to the Nez Percé and ensuring that it is complied with. The chiefs of the Nez Percé are unsure how to react to this: Refusing to move into the reservation would mean war with the Americans. However, when a group of young Indians, whose leader lost his father in a confrontation with whites, carries out a private act of revenge on white settlers, there is a first confrontation with American cavalry and local volunteers. Joseph wants to negotiate and sends a group of Indians to meet the Americans with a white flag, which, however, is shot at by the volunteers. In the ensuing battle, the Indians are victorious and can drive out the US cavalry . After this battle, however, the chiefs of the Nez Percé realized that they had to flee, and they decided to move to the Crow who were friends with them in Montana and possibly on to Canada. General Howard, although he can understand the motives of the Indians, goes into pursuit.

The Indians reach Montana via arduous mountain paths, where they feel safe. However, Howard has called in another army unit under Colonel John Gibbon to attack the Indian camp on the Big Hole River one morning. The Indians can rally and drive the Americans back, but they have to break off their camp and continue their flight. Since the Crow don't want to help them, all they can do is flee to Canada. They are able to avoid another army unit under Colonel Samuel Davis Sturgis , but shortly before the border they are stopped by Nelson Appleton Miles ' troops, and Howard approaches from the south. A group of Indians around Chief White Bird managed to escape to Canada, while Joseph had to surrender to Howard and Miles. With the words "I will never fight again" he hands over his rifle.
