Iamblichus (bishop)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jamblichus (also Jamblychus , Iamblichus , Iamnerius ) was Bishop of Trier in the 5th century . The bishop is to 475 / 476 mentioned.

Life

Eugen Ewig deduces from the Greek name of the bishop a Greek-Oriental colony that remained in Trier. From this Iamblichus and his predecessor Cyrillus emerged. Others assume that the bishops came from the Rhone region. In the epistle of Bishop Auspicius of Toul , the Frankish ruler of the area around Trier, the Comes Arbogast , is warned to treat Bishop Jamblichus respectfully. He also had relationships with other northern Gaulish bishops, such as Lupus of Troyes and Sidonius Apollinaris . At this time there are signs of the subordination of other dioceses, such as that of Troyes, to the Trier church and thus the development towards a metropolitan seat.

A funerary inscription from an iamblichus was found in Chalon-sur-Saône . There seems to be no doubt that this is the Bishop of Trier. Only the dating to 479 is problematic. Jamblichus may have left Trier around 486 in connection with the Franconian takeover of the city.
