Ian Blackford (born May 14, 1961 in Edinburgh ) is a Scottish politician of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

Blackford was born in Edinburgh in 1961. He attended the Royal High School there . Blackford worked in finance. He worked as a division manager at the National Westminster Bank and, following various takeovers, headed the operational business of Deutsche Bank in Scotland and the Netherlands.

Political career

For the first time Blackford appeared in the 1997 general election to elections at the national level. In his constituency of Ayr , however, he received only the third highest percentage of votes. After the death of Labor politician Gordon McMaster in July 1997, by-elections were required in his constituency of Paisley South . The SNP set up Blackford for these. On election day, however, he could not prevail against the Labor candidate Douglas Alexander .

Blackford acted as treasurer of the SNP. After a disagreement and a growing falling out with party leader Alex Salmond , he was removed from office. In the general election in 2015 , Blackford ran in the constituency of Ross, Skye and Lochaber . On election day, he prevailed against his liberal-democratic competitor Charles Kennedy , who had represented the constituency or its predecessor constituencies of Ross, Cromarty and Skye and Ross, Skye and Inverness West since 1983 in the House of Commons . In Parliament he is a member of the Petitions Committee . Despite losing votes, Blackford maintained his mandate in the early general election in 2017 . Since June 2017 he has led the SNP MPs in the British House of Commons.
