Ian Campbell was the son of Captain Ian Campbell and his second wife Louise. In 1949 his father inherited the title of Duke of Argyll from a cousin. Since then Campbell carried the courtesy title of Marquess of Lorne . His parents divorced in 1951. Shortly afterwards the father married Margaret Sweeny ; the sons stayed with their mother, who lived with them in France and Portugal.
