Location

On the occasion of his 175th birthday in 1964, the Dresden Advisory Board for Fine Arts in the city council decided on the Friedrich List monument. It was to be built on the square, which was renamed Friedrich-List-Platz in 1962, in front of the technical college with the faculty for economics and transport, which was rebuilt after 1945 . Also in 1962 it was given the honorary name of the Friedrich List University of Transport . In 1992 the Faculty of Transport Science Friedrich List was accepted into the TU Dresden . Today the Dresden University of Applied Sciences - University of Applied Sciences is integrated in the buildings. A park-like area with trees and bushes was created on the forecourt. The Friedrich List monument has been located on this forecourt since 1964.

Memorial design

The design by the Dresden sculptor Wilhelm Landgraf (1913–1998) convinced the councilors. The plaster model of the relief was intended to represent the development of transportation in history and the near future. With the illustration of the first German steam locomotive Saxonia and the first Elbe steamship Queen Maria , both designed and built by Johann Andreas Schubert (1808–1870), Landgraf shows the beginning of transport. The other side is dedicated to modern progress with rocket launch pads and jet propelled aircraft. The front pays tribute to Friedrich List's life's work . The inscription reads: "His work for a modern transport system in Germany, the productive forces and the wealth of the nation will be increased in extraordinary and varied ways by a perfect transport system."

execution

After the signing of the contract for work 17/64 on May 20, 1964, sandstones from Saxon Switzerland were laid in block form on a prepared foundation . Then the sculptors from the Werner Hempel sculpture workshop implemented the design in the traditional way with chisels and mallets . In September 1964, the cultural council of the city of Dresden removed the monument and ceremoniously unveiled it. The cost was 15,000 GDR marks. After 1990 the monument fell victim to graffiti sprayers and had to be cleaned several times. The current condition clearly shows that a restoration would be necessary. Through broken joints is water penetrated and harm the sandstone.
