Player career
Born in the USA, Joy grew up in Bo'ness, Scotland , and was active as a teenager in the youth academies of Manchester United and Tranmere Rovers . He then played as a professional footballer for Montrose FC , Kidderminster Harriers and Chester City . At the end of 2003 he moved to Major League Soccer to the Columbus Crew , where he was not used outside of the reserve team.
In 2004 he moved to Hamburger SV and played one season for the club's second team. He then moved to FC St. Pauli in what was then the third-class Regionalliga Nord. There he became a crowd favorite and in 2006 he was promoted to the second Bundesliga with the team.
In January 2008, he moved again to the US and played a major role in Real Salt Lake reaching the MLS play-offs for the first time in their history.
Despite a successful trial training at Fortuna Düsseldorf in January 2009, he stayed in Major League Soccer. In the 2009 season, injuries threw him back and he asked to terminate his contract with Real Salt Lake in order to move back to Europe. On September 16, 2009 Joy signed at FC Ingolstadt 04 .
After three games, he moved to the Portland Timbers , where he became team captain during the 2010 season. His contract was not renewed after the last season.
In April 2011, Joy announced via Twitter that he had retired from the professional soccer business. Since then, he has appeared frequently on ESPN700 radio station, where he acts as a commentator for Real Salt Lake games.
