Ian Andrew Kirkpatrick (born May 24, 1946 in Gisborne ) is a retired New Zealand rugby union player .

He began his career with the Poverty Bay Rugby Football Union at the age of 20 . A year later he moved to Canterbury Rugby Football Union and established himself in the regional national team. In October 1967 he was appointed to the squad of the All Blacks , the national team, for the first time , on November 25 of the same year he completed his first international match, in Paris against France .

His international career lasted until August 1977. He was used in 39 internationals (nine of them as team captain) and scored 16 attempts . This mark was a new national record and was not exceeded until 1983 by Stu Wilson . Kirkpatrick completed another 74 games for the All Blacks; in his day games against clubs and regional teams were far more common than against national teams.

Nationally, Kirkpatrick scored 115 attempts in 289 top tier games. He also played for Canterbury in 33 games for the Ranfurly Shield . In 1979, Kirkpatrick announced his resignation. In 2003 he was inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame .
