The island of Ibo is a coral island belonging to the Quirimbas archipelago, 8.3 km off the coast of the province of Cabo Delgado in northern Mozambique . Within the province, the island belongs to the Ibo district , which includes eight other islands in addition to the island. The island is about 9 km², 4.9 km long and 4.7 km wide, with larger bays.

Like the rest of the archipelago, Ibo is part of the Quirimbas National Park . The largest town is the city of the same name, Vila do Ibo, in the northwest with around 3000 inhabitants.

history

Arab traders are said to have set up trading posts here as early as 600 AD , with the result that the island soon became part of the Swahili culture of the East African coast. Vasco da Gama reached the island in 1502; From 1590 the Portuguese used the island for the trade in slaves and ivory and the island developed into the second most important Portuguese trading center in Mozambique. Since the island was repeatedly targeted by the Dutch and pirates from Madagascar , the Portuguese built Fort São João Batista do Ibo in 1791 . Other fortresses on Ibo are Fort Santo António do Ibo and Fort São José do Ibo .

On April 25, 2019, cyclone Kenneth wreaked havoc on parts of the island.
