Icchokas Meras (born October 8, 1934 in Kelmė , † March 13, 2014 in Tel Aviv ) was a Lithuanian writer and screenwriter .

Life

Meras was born in 1934 to Jewish parents in Kelmė, a city in northwest Lithuania with one of the oldest Jewish communities in the country . During the German occupation of Lithuania, his parents were persecuted by the Nazis in the summer of 1941. Meras narrowly escaped. He later wrote: “On July 28, 1941, I was taken to a trench to be shot. It was decided by chance to send some of the children back. I also happened to join people who valued the life of a seven-year-old child. ”Until 1944, he and his siblings were hidden by a Lithuanian family. In the post-war turmoil, Meras attended high school and soon discovered an inclination to write while working for a local newspaper.

In 1958 Meras graduated as a telecommunications engineer in Kaunas and moved to Vilnius . He devoted most of his free time to literature. In 1960 he published his collection of short stories "The Yellow Star", which is based on his childhood experiences with the persecution of the Jews. In 1963 he published "The Earth Lives" and his first novel "Remis for Seconds", his internationally best known work. His second novel “What is the rest of the world” was published in 1965. “Die Mondwoche” and “The old fountain” followed in 1966 and 1971. In 1971 he published his dark existentialist novel "Striptease, or Paris-Rome-Paris". This work was published in the monthly literary magazine Pergalė and was flatly rejected by the leadership of the Lithuanian Communist Party.

In 1972 he emigrated to Israel to escape the growing pressure of the authorities because of his "dissent".
