With I dreamed in May by love which starts refrain of a shimmy -Liedes that the conductor and composer Franz Doelle wrote. Alfred Berg wrote the text for it . In 1926 it became the title hit for the silent film of the same name by Franz Seitz senior , for which Doelle also wrote the screenplay , while Willy Schmidt-Gentner composed the music for illustration. The artistically less demanding film I dreamed of love in May was premiered on August 16, 1927 in Berlin.

However, Doelle's Shimmy song was already used in 1925 in the James Klein revue Das lachende Berlin in the Apollo Theater , the libretto of which Carl Bretschneider wrote after his farce of the same name written in 1921 .

The hit, which was published in 1924 by Mignon-Verlag Berlin, appeared again in 1926 by Rondo-Musikverlag Berlin. He was also quoted on motivational postcards. Well-known artists such as the operetta tenor Max Kuttner and the singer and songwriter Willy Weiss sang it on gramophone records .
