I see the ships going down the river is a music album by the Hamburg punk band Abwärts . It was released in 1990 as a co-production by the Düsseldorf record company TOT and Virgin Schallplatten GmbH . The album is assigned to the genre punk rock .

Music genre

"I see the ships sailing down the river" is the fourth album by the Hamburg punk band. It turns out to be much more rocking than its predecessor, the self-titled downward album. A clear metal influence can also be heard.

History of origin

After Abwärts had only existed temporarily and de facto as a solo project by Frank Z. with changing musicians in previous years, he and FM Einheit (Frank-Martin Strauss) reactivated the group with the two guitarists Michael "Elf" Mayer ( Destination Zero , ex- Slime ) and Uwe Bastiansen ( Mask For ) as well as the new bassist Jochen Hansen ( Die Epuche ). A contract for two studio albums was signed with the record company Totenkopf , the own label of the befriended Düsseldorf punk band Die Toten Hosen , and the return album “I see the ships going down the river” was recorded in Hamburg, Berlin and Düsseldorf.

The album was released in LP and CD format. It was released as a coproduction by Totenkopf and the major label Virgin Records, which, like the Toten Hosen products, took over the distribution.

Reception, tours and sales

Certainly the contract with the skull label of the Toten Hosen, which meanwhile belonged to the most successful German music groups, contributed to the attention of the reunited Downward. This was followed by "various cover stories, festival appearances and tours." Before the band began an extensive tour from April 27 to May 12, 1990, FM Einheit got out due to lack of time and overload and was replaced by the new drummer Frank Seele (Destination Zero) . During this tour was in Munich and the Playboy magazine on down carefully. The group writes about this on their homepage:

“The fact that the band is now quite well known then brought the legal department of 'Playboy' onto the scene. Under threat of a fine of a quarter of a million marks, we were forbidden to continue using the downward bunny on posters and covers, etc., because it would represent a 'malicious disfigurement of the Playboy bunny'. Of course they were right. "

In the summer and autumn of 1990, further appearances followed.

Sales were within the expected range with a total of 30,000 units.

In 1999 Die Toten Hosen played a version of the title track “I see the ships shutting down the river” for the cover version sampler “Pop 2000. There's only one time”.
