Ichijō, 66th Tennō of Japan

Ichijō ( Japanese 一条 天皇 , Ichijō-tennō ; * July 15, 980 , † July 25, 1011 ) was the 66th Tennō of Japan . He ruled from June 23, 986 to June 13, 1011.

The actual political power was at the beginning of his office with the regent ( Sesshō ) from the Fujiwara family Fujiwara no Kaneie (929-990).

Ichijō's first wife ( Kōgō ) was Teishi ( 定子 , also read Sadako), whose lady-in-waiting Sei Shonagon was the author of the pillow book . When Fujiwara no Michinaga came to power as regent, he wanted to make his daughter Kogō and claimed that the titles Chūgū ( 中 宮 ) and Kōgō ( 皇后 ) are different, although both are synonyms. Teishi was given the title of Kogo and Fujiwara no Shoshi , Michinaga's daughter, was given the title of Chugu.

Shōshi gave birth to the Tennō Go-Ichijō and Go-Suzaku . She was considered wise and, as empress, often prevented the arbitrariness of her own brothers. She and her father Fujiwara no Michinaga gathered well-known and educated women around them. The farm belonged Murasaki Shikibu (author of Genji Monogatari ), Izumi Shiku (poet), Akazome Emon (author of the Eiga Monogatari ) u. a. on.
