The Ichthyotringidae are an extinct fish family from the order of the lizard fish relatives (Aulopiformes) that lived in the Upper Cretaceous. Fossils of the two known genera have been found in Europe, Lebanon , Israel , North Africa, and North America.
features
The Ichthyotringidae were small to medium-sized fish with a slender shape. Their long, narrow head is striking, with both the upper and the lower jaw elongated like a beak. Both jaws were covered with small teeth. The eyes were big. The short dorsal fin was about the middle of the body. The pelvic fins were small, the caudal fin was forked. In general, trunk and caudal fin skeletons are rather primitive, while the long rostrum is one of the derived characteristics .
Genera
Two genera have been described so far.
- Apateopholis Woodward, 1890 ( Synonym Rhinellus Agassiz, 1844; 2 species)
- Ichthyotringa Cope, 1878 (7 species)
Systematics
The Ichthyotringidae are assigned to Nelson together with the also extinct families Dercitidae and Prionolepidae of the suborder Ichthyotringoidei within the Aulopiformes (lizardfish relatives). Other scientists assign all Cretaceous lizardfish relatives to the suborder Enchodontoidei, which, however, is not monophyletic .
