Idaios (epithet of Zeus)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Idaios ( Greek  Ἰδαῖος ) is an Epiklesis of Zeus in the Greek religion , who calls him Zeus from the Ida Mountains. As such, he is invoked both on the Ida in the Troas in Asia Minor and on the Cretan Ida .

For Homer , Zeus Idaios is the father of Dardanos , the progenitor of the Trojan Dardans , and is the highest god enthroned on Ida in the Troas. On the Ida as well as in Troy one sacrifices to him equally. Laogonos , Dardan's brother, is his priest. As Zeus Idaios he is also mentioned by Quintus of Smyrna and by Virgil . Coins from Ilion and Skepticism bear Epiklesis as an inscription, altars are known from Gargara and the Phrygian Kelainai , among others .

The Greek myth connects the birth of Zeus with the Cretan Ida, his main sanctuary there is the Idean grotto , in which he is also recorded in writing. The Cretan Zeus Idaios is named among others by Polybios and Nonnos of Panopolis.
