The Idroscalo is an artificial lake in Milan that was opened in 1930 as a landing pad for seaplanes , but is mainly used as a local recreation area and as a regatta course for canoeing and rowing .
history
Construction work on Idroscalo began in 1928. It was opened as a landing pad on October 28, 1930. When it was foreseeable that seaplanes would not prevail over conventional aircraft, Milan Linate Airport on the west bank of the Idroscalo was built from 1933 to 1937.
The first rowing event was held on the Idroscalo in 1934.
After the cessation of flight operations for seaplanes, the Idroscalo developed into the local recreation area of the city of Milan. A corresponding infrastructure has settled around the lake, including the Europark Idroscalo Milano theme park .
The Idroscalo was the location for key scenes in the films Chronicle of a Love by Michelangelo Antonioni (1950) and Rocco and his brothers by Luchino Visconti (1960).
