The British band's song, which emerged at the height of the street punk movement, calls on rival youth gangs to unite. According to the music magazine Rolling Stone , the song clarified the "clear, ideological and political views" of the music group, which, according to Jimmy Pursey, saw itself as the "voice of the people".

The punk rock anthem has been covered several times, including in 1991 by the band Die Toten Hosen on the album Learning English Lesson One together with Jimmy Pursey from Sham 69 himself. Other covers are from The Kids (1982), Mama's Boys (1984), 7 Seconds (1985), Bérurier Noir (1989), The Dirty Scums (1992), Wat Tyler (1994), Oi Polloi (1996), The Casualties (1998), DJ Paul Elstak with Teenage Warning (1998), Rancid (1999), In-Line (1999), Red Alert (1999), Angelic Upstarts (2001), Manic Hispanic (2001), BBQ Chickens (2003), The Black Tartan Clan (2008), The Duke Spirit (2010), Les Ramoneurs de menhirs (2010), Tim Timebomb (2013) and Jarvis Cocker (2014). The 1995 song "Kids are United" by Atari Teenage Riot is based on "If the Kids are United", but adds a lot of other statements to it. Also named after the song is the book “If the kids are united. From punk to hardcore and back. ”By Martin Büsser .
