Oi Polloi is a British anarcho-punk band from Edinburgh that was formed in 1981. It is considered to be one of the most important bands in this direction.

The name is a play on the English phrase, borrowed from the Greek, hoi polloi (literally: "The many", but also "The crowd", "The common people"). " Oi! “Is a form of punk rock that emerged in Britain in the late 1970s among working class youth. Oi Polloi played anthemic Oi! Punk at the beginning of their career, but later evolved into an anarcho- hardcore punk direction. It often recur, pure street punk -pieces and even folk punk on conditions influencing the fate in their repertoire.

history

Oi Polloi live at the Augustibuiller Festival, Lindeberg, Sweden (August 2005)

Because of the band name, Oi Polloi is often suspected of being an "apolitical skinhead band". In fact, they were heavily influenced by groups like Cockney Rejects and Sham 69 in their early phase , but later turned as great admirers of anarchist punk bands like Crass or Antisect political topics with more demanding content and reduced hardcore punk .

When the band was formed, the band members were still in school. In late 1981 they gave their first concert at Stewarts Melville College in Edinburgh.

After further appearances in the Edinburgh area, they recorded their first demo Last of the Mohicans and in 1984 released their first studio demo Destroi the System . After a positive review in Sounds magazine , the demand for concerts also increased from the wider area. Another studio demo followed, Green Anarchoi , and then the first record Resist the Atomic Menace .

From 1988 onwards they toured mainland Europe (especially Western Europe ) as well as the USA and Canada .

In 2003 her first single ( Carson? ) Was released in Scottish Gaelic . Since then, they have also been singing in this language and using it for daily entertainment, as they consider it important for the preservation of this (and other) endangered languages . The singer is also involved in Gaelic television.

The band has had an impressive number of over fifty different members in several incarnations since its inception.

Style and ideology

Oi Polloi represent a radical environmental protection policy with the motto "No compromise in defense of our earth" (German: No compromise in the defense of our earth). They support campaigns to defend animal rights (some band members are vegans , others vegetarians ) and in their texts call for resistance against racism (“ Apartheid stinx ”), homophobia (“ When two men kiss ”), neo-Nazism (“ Nazi scum ”) and Imperialism (" Americans out "). In some of the songs they address Neopaganism (" Free the Henge ", " Clachan Chalanais "). The humor is not neglected either, as can be seen in a set recipe for preparing a vegan meal (" anarcho-pie "). shows. As an opponent of capitalism , Oi Polloi represent the DIY philosophy and sell their products themselves or through small independent labels they are friends with .

In the past, the band has been accused of being anti-Semite , allegedly burning Israel flags at their concerts, and being close to Gaelic nationalism . The band, however, vehemently denies both and insists with their commitment to Scottish culture only fighting against English cultural imperialism .
