history

After the Spanish conquered Tenerife, it was colonized in the 16th century. The indigenous people, the Guanches , were partly Christianized or enslaved under the leadership of Alonso Fernández de Lugo .

The Iglesia de San Marcos was built in the 16th century in the village of Icod de los Vinos in the period after the conquest of Tenerife. Today's church building was created by expanding a small chapel , which was built on the same site in the 15th century. The church has a rectangular plan and is divided into three naves. There are a total of eight chapels, three on each side and two more at the end of the nave .

The church, which has been enlarged several times, has a remarkable Renaissance portal, the church ceiling was made of dark red-brown heartwood from Canarian pine , and the nave and chapels are covered by Mudejar coffered ceilings. The baroque altar is decorated with silver ornaments. The Iglesia de San Marcos is also home to numerous art treasures, including the sculpture by Martín de Andújar Cantos . Among the sculptures is the representation of Saint Mark, one of the oldest in Tenerife, which comes from the Hispano-Flemish school of the 15th century.

A small museum, Museo de Arte Sacro, houses the most valuable treasures, including the large filigree silver cross that comes from the workshop of Espellos in Havana Cuba and is considered the largest silver filigree cross in the world.

Not only the church and its art treasures, but also the Plaza de Andrés de Lorenzo Cáceres, which surrounds the church, have been placed under monument and cultural protection .
