Ignace Colombani (born August 18, 1908 in Montreal , † August 21, 1988 in Tattone (Vivario) , Haute-Corse department ; also: Ignaziu Colombani , pseudonym: Petru u Muntagnolu ) was a French colonial administrator and writer.

Life

Ignace Colombani's family came from Morosaglia in Corsica . Colombani began his training at the École coloniale in Paris in 1929 . He worked in the administration of the French colonies . From March 1949 to March 1950 he took over the post of governor of the colony of Niger from Jean Toby on an interim basis . From 1950 to 1951 Colombani was governor of the Ubangi-Shari colony and finally from 1951 governor of the Chad colony . He was recalled from this post in 1956 at the age of 48. He was not entrusted with any other offices in the colonial administration, allegedly because of his poor relationship with the higher commissioner of French Equatorial Africa . Back in Europe, Colombani devoted himself mainly to maintaining the Corsican language , in which he wrote poems and his memoirs. In 1958 he became president of the language society Lingua Corsa , which published its own magazine and a French-Corsican dictionary. He was also Vice President of the Société des sciences historiques et naturelles de la Corse .
