Ignacio de Asso
Ignacio Jordán Claudio de Asso y del Rio (born June 4, 1742 in Saragossa ; † May 21, 1814 ibid) was a Spanish lawyer, diplomat and amateur naturalist.
Life
He studied law as well as ancient languages and Arabic in Cervera , Barcelona and his hometown. There he became a university professor and served the crown in Madrid, especially as a diplomat in the Netherlands and in Bordeaux. In addition to legal historical works, e.g. B. 1771 on the Castilian civil law , and one of Aragón's economics (1794-98), but in Amsterdam he also published books on the Aragonese flora and fauna - the result of his own investigations, further z. B. 1801 about the fish of the Spanish Mediterranean coast. He also translated important ancient works by Galen and Euclid from Arabic and modern authors such as Newton , Descartes and Lamarck into Spanish. In his old days he had to flee from Napoleon's troops from Saragossa, but returned after the end of the occupation as a highly respected patriot and scholar (he also read chemistry and geology!). Three months before his death he was appointed Regidor of his hometown.

Honors
The plant genus Assonia from the family of mallow (Malvaceae) is named after him.
