Ignacy Chrzanowski

Ignacy Chrzanowski (born February 5, 1866 in Stok Lacki , Russian Empire , † January 19, 1940 in Sachsenhausen concentration camp ) was a Polish literary scholar. He is considered to be the founder of Polish historical literary studies.

Life

He attended high school in Warsaw from 1876 to 1883. At the Warsaw University he studied classical philology from 1883 to 1888. He deepened his studies from 1891 through study visits to Paris, Breslau (1890-1891) and Berlin (1891-1894), where he took the subject of Slavic Philology. After returning to Poland, he taught as a teacher in Warsaw from 1894 to 1910. He also published some literary works.

Corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAU) he became in 1906. In 1910 he received a call to the Jagiellonian University (UJ) as a full professor for the history of Polish literature in Krakow . In 1914 he was made a full member of the PAU. In 1931 he retired .

The UJ honored him in 1936 with the award being awarded the title of Professor hc on Monday, November 6, 1939, he was from the sturmbannführer Bruno Müller with a further 182 people, including more than 100 professors as part of the Krakow Special Action arrested and Deported to Sachsenhausen concentration camp, where he died.

Chrzanowski was Henryk Sienkiewicz's second cousin and related to Joachim Lelewel , about whom he has also published. His daughter is Hanna Chrzanowska , who was beatified in 2018 .
